Besefa Farm: Turning Waste into Wealth Through Black Soldier Fly Farming

At Mt Kenya Hub, we are proud to spotlight enterprises that are reimagining therelationship between waste and value. Besefa Farm, founded and led by Peter Maina andbased in Nakuru, is one such enterprise. Using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, Besefa Farmconverts organic waste into two high-value outputs: protein-rich animal feed and nutrient-dense organic bio-fertiliser. In doing so, the enterprise recovers resources that wouldotherwise be lost, creating a genuinely circular production system right at the heart ofKenya's agricultural economy.
What makes Besefa Farm especially compelling is that its impact has already beenrecognised beyond the PINCA-Y program. The enterprise has been highlighted by theKenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) and DevelopmentAid through various programsand initiatives, affirming both the viability and the significance of its approach. This kind ofexternal validation speaks to the strength of what Peter and his team have built: a businessmodel grounded in sustainability, science and a deep understanding of the waste challengefacing farming communities in Kenya.
Besefa Farm is one of 26 youth-led enterprises in our PINCA-Y 2026 cohort, a programimplemented by Mt Kenya Hub with the support of DanChurchAid Kenya. PINCA-Y, whichstands for Promoting Innovation, Networking and Climate Action for Youth, exists to backexactly this kind of enterprising spirit. We are proud to walk alongside Besefa Farm as theygrow, scale and continue to prove that the circular economy is not just a concept. It is abusiness model that works.
