Moto Feeds: Restoring Grasslands, Empowering Pastoralists
Since its establishment in 2018, Moto Feeds has been doing something quietlytransformative in the pastoral landscapes of Kenya. Led by Isaac Maigua, the enterpriseworks directly with pastoralist communities to restore degraded grasslands using BomaRhodes grass, a highly nutritious fodder that also functions as an all-season soil cover. Theresults to date are remarkable: over 70,000 hectares of grasslands restored, more than500,000 trees planted, 900 families engaged in restoration activities, and a 70% reductionin grazing pressure in the Mau region. These are not small numbers. They represent agenuine and measurable shift in the health of the land and the livelihoods of thecommunities that depend on it.
Beyond production, Moto Feeds invests deeply in community empowerment. Theenterprise trains pastoralists to establish their own seed banks, ensuring a sustainable andlocally-controlled supply of Boma Rhodes hay for livestock, with surplus available for sale.Women play a central role in seed harvesting, earning an additional income stream thathelps families invest in education and improve their living standards. This model reflects aprofound understanding that lasting land restoration must be built on the agency andparticipation of the communities who steward that land.
Moto Feeds is one of 26 enterprises in the PINCA-Y 2026 cohort, a program implemented byMt Kenya Hub with the support of DanChurchAid Kenya. We are proud to champion anenterprise that connects ecological restoration to genuine human flourishing, and we lookforward to seeing the continued growth of Isaac Maigua's vision for a greener, moreresilient pastoral Kenya.
