Deforestation and household energy access are two of the most persistent environmentalchallenges in Kenya, and they are deeply connected. Vangreen Enterprise Ltd, based inNakuru and participating in the PINCA-Y 2026 cohort, is addressing both through theproduction of charcoal briquettes made from organic waste. Serving households, restaurants and poultry brooders, Vangreen offers an affordable, cleaner alternative toconventional charcoal, reducing the demand for wood fuel while simultaneouslyrecovering value from waste streams that would otherwise be discarded. It is astraightforward idea with a meaningful impact, and it captures the essence of what thecircular economy is about: keeping materials in use, reducing waste and meeting real needsmore sustainably.
The markets Vangreen serves are significant and growing. Households across Kenyadepend on charcoal for daily cooking, and restaurants and poultry operations requireconsistent, reliable heat sources for their operations. By producing a briquette that meetsthese needs without contributing to deforestation, Vangreen positions itself at a genuinepoint of demand and offers customers an option that is both economically viable andenvironmentally responsible. In doing so, the enterprise contributes to a shift in energybehaviour that, multiplied across many users, has real environmental significance.
